Vegetarianism involves the practice of following a diet that includes fruits, vegetables, cereal grains, nuts, and seeds, with or without dairy products or eggs. A vegetarian does not eat meat, including game, poultry, fish, crustacea and shellfish, and may also abstain from by-products of animal slaughter such as animal-derived rennet and gelatin. Various foods or treats, such as cake, chocolate, chips, gum, marshmallows and gummy candies, often contain unfamiliar animal ingredients, and may especially be a concern for vegetarians due to the likelihood of such additions. While some vegetarians are unaware of animal-derived rennet's role in the usual production of cheese and may therefore unknowingly consume the ingredient, others of the diet are not bothered by its consumption. Often, however, animal-derived products, such as certain cheeses, gelatin or other animal-derived ingredients, are scrutinized by vegetarians prior to purchase or consumption.
Vegetarianism can be adopted for different reasons: In addition to ethical reasons, some reasons for vegetarianism include health, religious, political, cultural, aesthetic or economic, and there are varieties of the diet: An ovo-vegetarian diet includes eggs but not dairy products, a lacto-vegetarian diet includes dairy products but not eggs, and an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet includes both eggs and dairy products. A strict vegetarian diet or vegan diet excludes all animal products, such as eggs, dairy, and honey.
Semi-vegetarian diets consist largely of vegetarian foods, but may include fish or poultry, or other meats on an infrequent basis. Those with diets containing fish or poultry may define "meat" only as mammalian flesh and may identify with vegetarianism. A pescetarian diet, for example, includes "fish but no meat". The common use association between such diets and vegetarianism has led vegetarian groups such as the Vegetarian Society to state diets containing these ingredients are not vegetarian, due to fish and birds being animals.
From: Eikipedia
There are several reasons why people choose vegetarian diets: an indisposition to eat meat, an aversion to killing animals, or a simple choice of a different lifestyle.
There are a number of dissimilar vegetarian diets. None of them need to be a really strict diet. The point here is the avoidance of all read meat (lamb, beef, pork, etc.)
The most common types of vegetarian diets allow vegetables and:
+ Vegan – Eats no food sourced from animals
+ Lacto-ovo – Same as the above but includes milk and eggs.
+ Lacto – Allows milk but will not eat eggs.
+ Ovo – Eats eggs only – but no other animal foods.
+ Pesco – Eats fish but no other animal foods (pescetarian)
+ Pollo – Allows chicken
+ Fruitarian (sub-set of vegan – includes only fruiting portion of plant).
These diets, being based on consumption of vegetables, fruits, nuts and whole grains, are high in fiber. Other advantages are that they are low in calories, refined sugars and saturated fat. With careful planning and the right knowledge, any type of the common vegetarian diets can provide adequate nutrition for the diabetic.
Remember that some nutrients must be emphasized: protein, calcium, zinc, iron, and the B complex vitamin.
+ Lacto/ovo diets provide protein by means of egg white and milk.
+ On the other hand, on a vegan diet protein needs are met by legumes (peas, nuts, beans, lentils, etc). By combining legumes with various dishes, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of protein can be attained.
To keep in mind: because of its high estrogen levels, a factor in the physical maturing process, soy milk could be undesirable for the vegan child, even though it is an excellent source of protein.
Could switching to a vegetarian diet cure diabetes?
Switching to a vegetarian diet will not probably cure your diabetes. But it will surely offer several benefits over a non-vegetarian diet. Among them: making your body more responsive to insulin (probably the most important advantage), reducing your risk of some diabetes-associated complications (quite important as well) and helping you better control your weight. All this, of course, depends on the particular food choices you make when following the type of vegetarian diet you selected. There is not a unique vegetarian eating plan.
The vegan diet is the strictest of all vegetarian diets. Vegans eat neither animal meats nor foods that come from animals, such as eggs and dairy products. Other types of vegetarian diets may allow dairy products and eggs. A strict vegan diet is generally low in saturated fat and cholesterol-free.
Vegetarian diets that include fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes in generous amounts are high in fiber and phytochemicals. Generally speaking, vegetarian diets are lower in calories than are non-vegetarian diets.
Bottom line: good vegetarian diets benefit people with diabetes.
Vegetarian diets generally lead to significant weight loss, which in turn can improve type 2 diabetes in people who are obese. This is true of similar weight loss from non-vegetarian diabetes diets as well.
A vegetarian diet makes your body more responsive to insulin, some studies say, and that is very important if you have diabetes. According to a 2006 study published in a scientific journal, 43 percent of people who ate a low-fat vegan diet reported a reduction on their need for diabetes medications.
The risk of diabetes-associated complications, such as kidney disease and cardiovascular disease, is also reduced with vegetarian diets. But again, all this depends on the specific kind of foods you choose.
Notwithstanding, before you switch to a vegetarian diet, it is always best to talk to a dietitian or doctor, if you have diabetes. They can help you create an eating plan that provides all the nutrients for your body and the right amount of calories to maintain the healthy weight.

The Four Types of Vegetarian Diets Explained
If you’re considering giving up meat, you may be confused by the different types of vegetarian diets available to you. Vegetarian diets range from the super restrictive vegan style of vegetarianism to the more liberal flexitarian diet which incorporates limited amounts of meat. Here’s how to understand the different options available to you when you choose to go vegetarian.
Types of vegetarian diets: The vegan diet
This is the most restrictive type of vegetarian diet. Vegans not only eliminate all animal-based foods but avoid dairy products of all types as well as eggs. While generally considered to be a healthy diet in terms of preventing disease, it takes planning to get enough protein, iron, and calcium on a vegan diet, although it’s not impossible. Many people start out with less restrictive form of vegetarianism and gradually progress to a vegan diet over time.
Types of vegetarian diets: Lacto-vegetarianism
People who adopt a lacto-vegetarian diet abstain from all meat products, including eggs, but continue to eat dairy products. The advantage to this form of vegetarianism is you’re less likely to develop a calcium deficiency due to the inclusion of calcium rich milk products.
Types of vegetarian diets: Lacto-ovo vegetarianism
Lacto-ovo vegetarians avoid all meat but allow themselves to eat both dairy products and eggs. The inclusion of eggs and milk makes it easier to maintain calcium and protein levels and is, in general, an easier form of vegetarianism to adapt to, particularly if you eat out a great deal. Have you ever stopped to consider how many baked goods contain eggs and dairy products.?
Types of vegetarian diets: Pescatarians
One of the least restrictive forms of vegetarianism is the pescatarian lifestyle where you avoid all meat products with the exception of fish. Many people don’t consider pescatarians to be true vegetarians since they allow themselves to eat seafood. They also consume dairy products and eggs.
Types of vegetarian diets: Flexitarians
Flexitarian is a relatively new term for a type of “on and off” vegetarian who eats a basic lacto-ovo vegetarian diet with the addition of meat products on occasion. This group of vegetarians is sometimes criticized for their lack of commitment to the vegetarian cause. Some flexitarians use this more flexible form of vegetarianism to test the waters and eventually transition over to more restrictive types of vegetarianism.

vegetarian diet plan
Being a vegetarian can be quite good in that you have a select group of foods which don't traditionally cause weight gain. Most vegetables are actually low in carbohydrates which are fibrous carbohydrates that are good for your digestive system. So any vegetarian diet plan that excludes anything but fruits and vegetables is likely to succeed.
For example an average sized potato contains roughly 10 grams of carbohydrates, and this is a similar amount contained within many other vegetables such as carrots, broccoli, pumpkin, and so forth.
In comparison it is unlikely that you would find something from your regular bakery that would be this low in carbohydrates which is actually good for you. The average donut contains around 50 grams upward in carbohydrates which mainly consist of sugar.
So what is the difference between the carbohydrates in vegetables and foods such as donuts and pies?
Basically vegetables contain fibrous carbohydrates which contain a lot of fiber and are good for your digestive system these are low G.I complex carbohydrates meaning that the body uses them over a long period of time because Complex carbohydrates or starch are simply sugars bonded together to form a chain. Digestive enzymes have to work much harder to access the bonds to break the chain into individual sugars for absorption through the intestines. So it doesn't instantly convert them to fat.
Now with the carbohydrates contained within pies and donuts we have sugar carbohydrates "simple" carbohydrates which are mainly made up sugar and if not eaten prior to intense physical exercise will convert to fat quite fast if not used.
Basically carbohydrates that are not used will in most cases be converted to fat and stored.
In most cases though some of us do have different genetic make ups when it comes to the structure of how our body stores fat, and if you didn't already know what that was it was your metabolism. Yes each of us has our own unique body type and there are three body types that every person has.
Here they are;
Ectomorph - This is the perhaps lucky for females who seem to want to keep their physique nice and slim, people with this body type can eat tones of food and it pretty much goes right through them. If you were ectomorph and ate unhealthy foods frequently throughout the day it is likely that you are going to gain weight.
Endomorph - this is perhaps the most unlucky when it comes to the body types, endomorphs put on weight easily with their slow metabolisms and have to watch that they don't eat too much of the wrong types of foods unless they want to top on some pounds. I have known body builders who are endomorph and have had to keep to such a strict diet it would practically drive any normal person crazy.
Mesomorph - these are the natural muscle bodies of all people. These body types are strong and buff up quickly, they also can get fat but with exercise and weights they are perhaps considered more to be the Olympian body type of all body types.
So with all that you really need to ensure that your diet plan coincides with your body type to ensure the best results.
So what steps do you need to take in order for you vegetarian diet plan to be a success?
It is a good idea to have a variety in your vegetarian diet plan if you want to see success with ease. You have to be realistic and make up an enjoyable vegetarian diet plan for yourself.
I find it best to create my own vegetarian recipes and play around with my diet as long as I stay within the limits of my carbohydrate intake and fat intake ( not that there's really anything you will have to worry about fat due to the fact that vegetables don't really have any).
So I am 80kgs and I eat 8 small meals in a day which keeps my metabolism going. I eat about 20g of carbohydrates, 8grams of healthy fats, and 15grams of proteins - This diet is only recommended for slimming.
It is perhaps extremely healthy to live off a vegetarian diet plan that has a wide variety of vegetables and fruits because of all the diverse vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants which will keep you going strong for a long life.

How to Understand a Vegetarian Diet Plan
Many people don't get it when they hear the words "vegetarian diet plan." This is oftentimes due to a misunderstanding about vegetarianism-assuming that all vegetarians eat nothing but pasta and therefore cannot lose weight. Others assume that because a person doesn't eat meat that they eat incredibly healthy, but this also isn't so. Understanding what nutrients you need and the right way to attempt a vegetarian diet is the key to losing weight without consuming meat.
Getting your carbs.
Though ridding your diet of empty carbs is a great way to slim down, eliminating them altogether can be an unhealthy (and dangerous) move in any vegetarian diet plan. Incorporating whole grains is essential, and vegetarians obviously need their vegetables! Stay away from the starchy varieties, however-including potatoes and corn. Instead, opt for leafy greens, broccoli, different varieties of squash, and a good variety, too! Keeping things fresh and different will keep you from falling into the trap of deprivation.
Getting your protein.
Any vegetarian will tell you that getting enough protein is certainly possible. However, it is essential to be careful that the proteins in any diet plan are abundant, but not bringing along with it too much fat. Remember that ingesting fat with your meal is important for digestion as well as nutrient absorption, but fat in excess is still fat. Therefore, stocking up on cheese as your main source of protein is likely not the best option for a vegetarian diet plan. Get a mix-cheeses, nuts, beans and legumes are all great options. Just think moderation.
Speaking of fats.
It is important to reiterate that last sentence: Just think moderation. Healthy fats have wonderful benefits, and are an essential part of any diet plan. It is just important to eat them sparingly. Don't down an entire can of nuts in one sitting-sprinkle them on salads or have a few with fruit as a snack mid-day. Avocado is a delicious and wonderfully healthy fat. Slice up a fourth of one to put on a sandwich (made with whole wheat bread, of course). There is a whole host of ways to incorporate healthy fats into your vegetarian diet plan.

A Vegetarian Diet Plan - How to Get Started
Perhaps you're worried about the health effects of eating fatty meat. Or maybe the idea of animals dying so you can eat them really bothers you. Whatever the reason, you've decided to start a vegetarian diet plan. So, now what?
It's all too easy to fall into the trap of eating lots of pasta, bread, and cheesy pizza when you first start eating vegetarian, but that's no better for you than the fatty diet you're trying to get away from. For a truly healthy vegetarian diet, you'll need to learn to incorporate whole grains, leafy greens, and fresh fruits and vegetables in a way that's satisfying and varied. It's easiest to balance your vegetarian diet plan if you continue to incorporate eggs and dairy (called ovo-lacto vegetarianism). Strict veganism requires some supplementation, notably with vitamin B12 and the fatty acids DHA and EPA, in order to meet minimum nutritional requirements. For this reason, if you are set on becoming a vegan, it's wise to consult with your doctor or a qualified nutritionist to make sure that your diet is healthy.
If you have concerns over the factory farming of eggs and dairy cattle, consider frequenting your local farmers' market, where you will find sustainably produced eggs, milk, and cheese which are free of dangerous hormones and antibiotics, produced by happy animals eating appropriate, natural feeds. To many consumers, the difference in quality between these sustainable animal products and their supermarket counterparts is nothing less than shocking.
Once you've decided on the type of vegetarianism you wish to pursue, it's time to devise a weekly meal plan. Write down ideas for seven breakfasts, seven lunches, seven snacks, seven suppers, and seven desserts. Possible breakfasts include low-sugar, whole grain cereal (hot or cold), buckwheat pancakes with real maple syrup, whole grain waffles (can be made ahead, frozen, and reheated in the toaster), omelets, and fruit salad. Possible lunches could be vegetable fried rice, fritattas, soup made with seasonal vegetables, or a roasted vegetable wrap. Snacks might be nuts, dried fruit, fresh fruit, or trail mix. Supper might be stuffed squash with a side of steamed asparagus and a salad, grilled portabella with a baked sweet potato and sweet-sour kale, or vegetable stew with fresh garlic bread and corn on the cob. Dessert might be baked apples drizzled with honey, fresh strawberries, peaches and blueberries topped with freshly whipped cream, or a homemade rhubarb pie.
Browse the cookbook section at your local bookstore and pick up a couple of vegetarian cookbooks that appeal to you, then use them during your brainstorming session to set up your weekly vegetarian diet plan. Learn about the seasonality of vegetables and fruits in your area so that you can get the best prices, eat local foods, and support local farmers.
Once you have your meals and snacks planned, go through and list the ingredients for each one, then combine that information to make your weekly shopping list. Check your kitchen to make sure that you have enough of all of your staples, and narrow the list down to things that you are almost out of, plus the foods you will be buying fresh. Some things, like soups and stews, lend themselves to large batches which can be frozen in individual containers for easy meals on busy days. Get in the habit of setting aside a weekend afternoon for cooking slow foods in big batches, then freezing them. Then you'll never be caught flat-footed if an emergency comes up or company arrives.

vegetarian atkins diet
It´s been a few years now since the controversial Atkins diet was making headlines. Some may have thought that a diet allowing virtually unrestricted fat intake was a ridiculous idea but the fact remains that weight loss did occur for many people following the diet. What didn´t change for most Atkins followers were cholesterol levels. Now enter "Eco-Atkins", a low-carb vegetarian diet that promotes weight loss and has also been shown to lower cholesterol.
Dr. David J.A. Jenkins is the lead author of the Eco-Atkins study which was recently published in the Archives of Internal Medicine. The intent of the study was to modify the traditional Atkins high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet in a way that also promoted the lowering of cholesterol. The largest difference in the Eco-Atkins diet was the use of plant-based foods like tempeh and seitan to replace the proteins derived from meat in the original Atkins diet. Fat was also more restricted on the Eco-Atkins plan, with most fats coming from nuts and seeds.
Though only a limited preliminary study, the results suggest that carbohydrate intake may affect cholesterol levels in dieters. If further studies can couple weight loss with improved cholesterol we are certain to hear more about the Eco-Atkins diet in the future.

vegetarian weight loss diet plan
Once you've decided on the type of vegetarianism you wish to pursue, it's time to devise a weekly meal diet plan.
Once you have your meals and snacks diet planned, go through and list the ingredients for each one, then combine that information to make your weekly shopping list.
